Gutted - the car and house

AN electrical fault on a car sparked an inferno outside a house in Wigan.

The fault set a Citroen Picasso on fire outside a property in Brookside Road, Worthington, at 2pm on Tuesday.

The car, pictured above, was parked in the driveway and the blaze spread into the house. Firefighters from Wigan managed to stop the fire spreading to the roof.

Crew commander Simon Connor said: “The fire developed at a rapid rate and spread to the house. We had to go on the roof and stop it spreading to the loft. Otherwise, we could have lost the roof of the property.

“What saved the rest of the house was the fact that the doors inside the property were shut, stopping the flames from spreading. One of our firefighters entered the property and used a hose reel to stop the spread.”

The owner of the car and house, a man thought to be in his 50s, escaped unharmed.
