Company fined £15,000 over packaging

A company which flouted packaging waste regulations has been fined £15,000.

Beaconsfield Footwear Ltd, of Skelmersdale, was also ordered to pay 4,204 compensation and 1,876 in costs by Ormskirk Magistrates' Court.

The company pleaded guilty to not complying with packaging regulations.

The company's non-compliance came to light following an Environment Agency visit to the site, in order to inspect compliance with other environmental regulations. It is estimated that the company has avoided paying around 16,000 in registration, recycling and recovery costs.

Environment Agency Officer Gareth Rogerson said: "The Packaging Waste Regulations ensure businesses take responsibility for packaging used on their products. Companies are required to contribute towards the recovery and recycling of packaging waste, in order to minimise their environmental impact.

"Although these regulations have been in force since 1997, some companies still ignore or remain unaware of their responsibilities. We actively seek to prosecute such companies, as we have done in this case."
