Contaminated drug leaves two dead

TWO men have died and several more people been hospitalised after taking a rogue batch of Ecstasy in Wigan.

The 19-year-old and 28-year-old both hail from the Poolstock area and are said to have been taken ill after taking a pill over the weekend.

A number of other people are also understood to be in Wigan Infirmary, some seriously ill.

And a North Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed that they had taken at least two more people to hospital in recent days with drug-related problems including breathing difficulties: a 23-year-old man from Ashton on Saturday and a 28-year-old from Pemberton at 6.30am on Monday morning.

Two young women, one said to be a friend of the late 19-year-old, are believed to be among others being treated for drug-related problems.

Detective Chief Inspector Howard Millington from Wigan CID said: “We are very concerned at how these deaths of two apparently fit young men have occurred.

“It is possible they are linked and this is something we are exploring as part of the investigation. It is possible that there may a particularly bad batch of drugs out there in the community and that is a concern to us.

“I would always urge people not to take illegal drugs and remind them that you do not know what they have been made up with. They can contain poisons and illicit chemicals that can have potentially fatal effects.

“If you have any information, I would ask you to contact police as soon as possible. We will treat the details you supply with the strictest of confidence.”

Anyone with information should phone police on 0161 856 7149 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
