Council boss defends town teens

WIGAN’S Council boss has leapt to the defence of the town’s teenagers after shameful scenes of yobs tormenting McDonald’s staff have been seen around the world.

In an impassioned statement, chief executive Donna Hall condemns a “flagrant display of anti-social behaviour” by youths in the town centre’s McDonald’s outlet that has now been viewed by almost 100,000 people on YouTube.

But more importantly she stresses that the trouble-makers’ peers should not all be tarred with the same brush and highlights the many fine achievements by the majority of our younger citizens.

She also profiles some of the carrot and stick measures the police and council have taken and which have helped Wigan record fewer crimes than anywhere else in Greater Manchester. Ms Hall said: “The vast majority of young people in Wigan do this borough proud every day of the year.

“Whether it be on the sporting field, in the classroom, on the stage or simply in the communities in which they live, young people make a fantastic contribution to life in our borough.”

And she adds: “It would be a sad injustice if the selfish actions of a small minority somehow became an image for young people in our borough.”
