Council buys former nightclub
The Pier Night Spot
WIGAN Council has bought Wigan Pier Nite Spot.
The building was due to be auctioned off last week by Pugh and Co, but was snapped up by the authority ahead of schedule to avoid a bidding war.
But council bosses are remaining tight-lipped about the site’s future, stating that it formulates part of a long-term plan for the Wigan Pier area.
The 7,706 sq ft nightclub and bar, which is in need of some refurbishment, had a bottom guide price of £110,000, but the actual sum it was sold for is unknown.
The club closed its doors in December 2011, following a long battle with environmental protection watchdogs over noise and first went on the market last March,
The club, which was started by Lennons Leisure more than 40 years ago, was under the ownership of Darshan Sidhu, when it closed.
Thwaites Brewery then took over the building and offered a sublease for a term.
Steve Normington, director of economy at Wigan Council, said: “The former Pier nightclub has been unused for many months. It was in danger of becoming an eyesore in an important part of Wigan. When the building came onto the market, the council took the opportunity to acquire it. We are in the process of producing a long-term plan for the future of the Wigan Pier area. The former nightclub building is a significant part of that plan.
“At this stage, there are no specific proposals for the site. Its future is being considered as part of the on-going planning work.”
