Councillor's blitz on dog dirt gathers momentum
A crusading councillor who launched a blitz on the nuisance of dog dirt is attracting big support for his campaign.
Coun Gary Wilkes recently handed out 2,500 dog "nappies" to help keep Wigan's streets cleaner.
The Bryn councillor's campaign struck a chord with the public and recently-announced new funding from PACT – Police and Communities Together – will allow him to take it to the next level.
Sally Wolstencroft, assistant director of the Council's Cleaner Greener Neighbourhoods, said: "We appreciate that dog fouling is becoming a hot topic again.
"As part of the ongoing PACT process, neighbourhoods have been evaluating community engagement and perception feedback.
"Dog fouling and fast food litter have come out as the issues that we need to prioritise in every twin township, albeit not every ward.
"We are currently organising roll-out of the campaigns, which will start in the New Year.
"I am looking at is the feasibility of installing poop scoop bag dispensers in some suitable locations.
"They need to be carefully sited to minimise likelihood of vandalism or the contents being strewn by young people.
"We are currently considering a brighter boroughs bid to purchase a couple for every ward for a fairly modest outlay of 250 plus vat, for a dispenser and 10,000 bags."
Coun Wilkes said: "I'm really thrilled the council have taken this on board.
"It's an issue that I don't think we will ever completely defeat, but if we can reduce it that's a great thing."
