Crackers or damp squib?

When it comes to festive traditions, Christmas crackers can often disappoint.

Bad jokes, flimsy paper hats and useless gifts have long been associated with the yuletide treats.

So with the festive season fast approaching, the Evening Post decided to sample a selection of crackers to compare the jokes, toys and bangs.

Each pack can be bought at high street stores for less than a fiver.

The Christmas crackers selected for scrutiny came from discount book store The Works, Asda, TK Maxx and Marks and Spencer.

The Works' range of crackers are certainly good value.

The shop, based in The Galleries, offers a pack of 12 crackers for just 4.99.

While no one expects comic genius from crackers, the jokes fared poorly.

Some of the best gags were: What do you call two robbers? A pair of knickers! ...and What do you call a horse in pyjamas? A zebra! The bang was something of a damp squib while gifts including a miniature pack of cards, a bottle opener and a hair clip.

TK Maxx has a big Christmas cracker range including Couples Crackers.

For 5, shoppers can buy two Christmas crackers with cufflinks for men and a necklace for women.

The crackers provided testing questions and puzzles, instead of jokes, and the bang was much louder.

Marks and Spencer offers a children's range of crackers for 5.

The pack of six included gifts such as reindeer stencils, dinosaur puzzles, and a snakes and ladders board game.

The jokes were clearly aimed for youngsters. Again, the bang was poor.

Supermarket Asda offers a pack of six crackers for 5.

The gifts included pens and whistles, and the brain teasers were good fun.
