The 44-year-old sustained injuries to his face, neck, torso and arms while at his home in Pinewood Crescent, Ince.

Distraught family members called the emergency services on Sunday evening.

Paramedics treated the victim, who is reported to have mental health issues, and he was sent to the specialist burns unit at Wythenshawe Hospital.

Police are now investigating the cause of the incident.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “We got a call from the ambulance service at 9.45pm on Sunday.

“A 44-year-old man set himself on fire and received burns to his neck, face, torso and arms, but his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

A spokesman for Hindley Fire Service said: “Three appliances attended, but the fire was out before we arrived.

“We did not deal with the casualty, as the ambulance service was there. He suffered 15 per cent burns to his upper body.

“There was no damage to the property.”

A spokesman for North West Ambulance Service confirmed paramedics attended.

Today, neighbours were shocked about the incident,

One resident of Pinewood Crescent said: “I saw the ambulance and fire engine, but could not see any flames coming from the house.

“It was upsetting to hear, especially as he has young children.
