'Darth Vader' arrested for assault
A Wigan man found drunk in a neighbour's flat told police that his name was Darth Vader.
Andrew Mark Heyes, aged 33, of Park Crescent West, ended up being arrested and charged with common assault, Wigan and Leigh magistrates were told.
Jayne Kearsley, prosecuting, said that police had been called to a phone box where they found Richard Hignett who told them that Heyes had returned very drunk to his flat after a night at their local pub.
But he had then turned nasty and slapped him across the face in an unprovoked attack. Mr Hignett had fled, fearing further attacks, leaving Heyes in his home.
When police gained entrance they found Heyes flat out on the sofa.
It was then that he gave his identity as sci-fi's most notorious villain.
Heyes was arrested and gave his correct identity at the police station.
He said that he had no recollection of assaulting Mr Hignett but agreed that, if that was what had been stated, it could have happened.
Miss Kearsley said that he had eight previous convictions, but nothing of a similar nature.
His last was in March 2005 for criminal damage when he received a 12 months conditional discharge.
Unrepresented, Heyes said that he and Mr Hignett weren't friends, merely neighbours.
He said: "We were both very drunk. I have known him for a couple of weeks as a neighbour, that's all, and he has just moved in and is a little bit older than me.
Unemployed and on benefits, Heyes pleaded guilty to assault.
The bench gave him a two-year conditional discharge for two years and told him to pay 100 criminal injuries compensation to Mr Hignett.
He was also ordered to make a 43 contribution to the costs of prosecution.
A fines collection order was made.
