Donkey viciously attacked
A WOMAN whose dog attacked a donkey while out for a walk was told if she does not keep her pet under control it will be destroyed.
Emma Rimavicius pleaded guilty at Wigan Magistrates’ Court, to being the owner of a dog who worried livestock.
She was walking her pet Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Rooney, on May 25 this year when the dog got off its lead.
It ran off and started its attack on the donkey, which was standing on agricultural land at Old Hall Mill Lane, Atherton.
The dog then clamped its jaws onto the donkey’s nose and would not let go for some time.
A man who the 28-year-old defendant was with at the time went over to the dog and tried to pull it off the other animal but to no avail.
Prosecuting, Mark Humphries, said: “Numerous attempts were made to get the dog off the donkey.
“A man tried to get it off by pulling it but despite his best intentions this only made matters worse.
“Water was also thrown over it and it was hit several times with a branch, but it did not let go for some time.”
The complainant asked Rimavicius, of Oxford Street, Leigh, to stay at the scene until police arrived but she did not do so.
She later told police it was because her children were attached to the dog and she was scared it would be taken away and destroyed.
A number of days later the complainant was driving down the road where the defendant lives, recognised the woman and told the police where she lived.
When she was visited by officers she immediately admitted the incident and that the dog belonged to her.
Rimavicius told the court: “The dog was on its lead but it pulled back and managed to slip out of its collar.
“We have since bought it a harness to make sure there is no way it can escape again.”
District Judge, Paul Richardson, said: “Originally this breed of dog was bred to fight and was bred not to let go, which is exactly what it did.
“It is your job to make sure your dog is kept under control although I accept that there are not many dog owners whose dog hasn’t slipped its lead.
“If anything like this happens again, the prosecution definitely will be applying to destroy the dog.”
The dog owner was ordered to pay £35 in costs and a £100 fine as well.
She was also told to pay £86.10 in compensation to the complainant for the donkey’s vets bills.
The donkey was injured in the attack but has made a recovery.
