BELEAGUERED motorists were breathing a sigh of relief today after a disruptive road closure project ended early.

Workmen managed to complete the resurfacing of Marsh Green and Kitt Green Road (above) just in time for the return to school.

However, drivers aren’t completely out of the woods yet because a lengthy bridge repair project is now getting under way on nearby Scot Lane.

Kitt Green Road was closed three weeks ago for repairs and resurfacing, which necessitated local diversions and disruption to bus services.

The highway hadn’t been in good condition for some time but the asphalt’s disintegration was rapidly accelerated by the harsh winter at the turn of the year.

It is not designated as a main road but engineers acknowledge that a lot of motorists need to use it because of the dearth of alternatives.

Council highways manager Mark Tilley said: “I’d like to thank residents for their patience and co-operation during the scheme and I am pleased that we have not only finished the work during the school holiday period, but also in three weeks rather than the expected four.”

Brennan Paving were the contractors who worked alongside Wigan Council and engineers praised their efficiency as well. Some minor repairs to the pavement will be carried out shortly but with buses back in operation and the road open again, the main work is completed.

During the scheme, some 11,000m sq of carriageway were resurfaced, plus large areas of crossings, bus stops and kerbs. A total of 500m sq of footways were repaired, and the concrete road itself was strengthened over 8,500m sq.

Now, however an 11-week scheme has begun to maintain the Scot Lane river bridge.

Highways bosses insist delays along the road will be kept to a minimum and that two-way traffic will remain in place for the majority of the time.
