Drivers warned to expect delays

Motorists are being warned of possible hold-ups on one of the borough's busiest roads.

Heavy congestion is expected when work begins on the East Lancs Road between Pennington and Bedford on July 20.

The road will be reduced to one lane each way for 12 weeks to carry out crucial bridge repair work.

Drivers looking for an alternative route through Leigh are exp ected to cause major disruption in the town.

Tony Hemingway, street works co-ordinator for Wigan council, said: "We are expecting that it could have an effect in the area, of course.

"If people choose an alternative route then it may get busier during the roadworks.

"There is a possibility of more traffic through Leigh but that's not something we can control. It's up to motorists where they choose to travel during the roadworks."

The council is planning to carry out waterproof repairs to bridges between Pennington and Bedford. The work is usually carried out every 30 years to prevent water reaching the bridges' structure.

Preliminary work will begin on the East Lancs Road on July, 6, during off-peak hours.

Some road signs had mistakenly informed drivers that a long stretch of the A580 would be completely closed in the next few months. The council has now said it will remove incorrect signs.

Mr Hemingway added: "The signs have been changed with a matter of urgency and we'd like to apologise for any confusion caused."
