Drunk snapped pool cue

A DRUNK had to be rugby tackled to the ground by police after he was caught starting his car while heavily intoxicated.

Anthony Pickett, 42, had earlier been asked to leave the Last Orders pub after he snapped a pool cue and drunkenly chatted up the landlord’s sister.

Wigan Magistrates’ Court heard how Pickett was first brought to the landlord’s attention at about 10pm on August 28.

Prosecutor Jane Kearsley said the defendant snapped the cue of a man he was playing pool with before disappearing for a couple of minutes and returning to pay the man £50. But when the defendant “came on to” the landlord’s sister he was asked to leave.

Reluctantly, Pickett left the pub, but the licensee followed him into the car park and watched as he got into a silver Ford Fiesta and tried to start the engine.

The landlord immediately dialled 999.

When police arrived they reported how the defendant was standing by the side of his car wearing no shoes or socks.

Pickett drunkenly tried to stagger away but was tackled to the ground and, after a brief struggle, was hand-cuffed and arrested.

But the defendant refused to provide a breath sample and became aggressive towards officers – repeatedly clenching his fists in a threatening manner. He made no comment in interview.

Pickett’s defence solicitor told how his client’s life had unravelled in 2006 when he started drinking heavily but told how he had abstained from booze since last May.

Magistrates ordered Pickett, of Closebrook Road, Worsley Hall, to complete 120 hours of unpaid work, endorsed his driving licence with 10 penalty points and told him to pay £85 costs.
