A DRUNKEN shoplifter stole three bottles of booze after drowning his sorrows following the death of his grandmother.

Daniel Bolton admitted stealing three bottles of vodka from a Co-op store in Standish before Wigan Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Katie Beattie, prosecuting, told how security guards clocked the 31-year-old, who has dozens of previous convictions, as he entered the Preston Road store on December 13.

They then stopped him as he left and he produced three bottles of stolen vodka, worth £52.50.

Police then identified Bolton via the in-store CCTV footage and the defendant made full and frank admissions in interview. He also admitted that he was drunk when he entered the store.

Peter Moran, defending, told how his client had lost his beloved grandmother a day earlier.

He said Bolton had taken comfort from alcohol at the time but fully accepted the charge and deserved credit for his guilty plea.

Magistrates handed Bolton a two-month curfew in which he must stay at his home address – on Prescott Lane, Kitt Green – between 7pm and 7am every night.

He was also ordered to pay £100 towards court costs and a £60 victim surcharge.
