UNWANTED and abandoned, this cute-as-a-button bunny must have thought he may never be loved.

But just a year after being handed in at Bryn Vets in Ashton Big Wig the rescued rabbit now has a loving owner, a new home and a two coveted awards to call his own.

Big Wig - a sable-lion head cross - won both the Best Adult Pet Rabbit and Best Overall in Show at the recent Haigh Show.

His owner Bridget Flynn, a veterinary nurse at Bryn Vets, said: “Eleven months ago a little boy turned up with a box with Big Wig in it. He said someone had given it to him saying they didn’t want him anymore and to take him to the nearest vets.

“He was really timid, I think he had been kept in a hutch because he didn’t like being handled. Now he has really come out of his shell.”

Taking sympathy on him, Bridget decided to take him home.

She added: “I am forever taking in strays or animals that have been dumped, all the nurses do really.

“I’ve got two cats at the moment as well, but anything that is looking for a temporary home while we find them a loving home ends up with one of us.

“Now he’s happily living in my garden.”

Bridget, 25, and a vet nurse for the last two years, decided she would enter her new friend in the British Rabbit Council-judged competition.

But it was only on arrival that she realised how seriously some competitors take such events.

Bridget said: “I just took him in his carry box with a little comb, other people were putting talc on their rabbits to make the fur shine and apparently you aren’t supposed to let show rabbits outside because the sun fades their coats.

But Big Wig loves the garden and then at night he goes to bed in the garage.”

It seem the outdoor lifestyle has suited him perfectly as Big Wig hopped away with two of the top prizes.

So could this be a direction for the one-time unwanted pet?

“No,” said Bridget. “He’s retiring at the top!
