AN INQUIRY has been launched after hundreds of glass bottles were dumped in Scholes.

Council officials are investigating after the mountain of glass was found on waste land opposite Wynsors World Of Shoes.

Wigan Central ward councillor George Davies has called for the clean-up, saying he is furious at the way the land is being abused.

He said; “I am concerned with the amount of dumped glass bottles as they are dangerous and look like they are from a pub or a nightclub and if it is then that’s absolutely disgusting.

“I want a massive clean-up and some enforcement put in place to prevent people from fly-tipping in the future.

“Wigan Council is serious about keeping the borough clean and since the Neighbourhood Act came into force littering and tipping on all open spaces is illegal.

“I fear that with all of the fly-tipping there is danger around.”

Investigation and enforcement of environmental crime officer at Wigan Council, John Dutton, said: “Steps will be taken to ensure fly-tipping stops because at the moment, the state of the land invites criminal activity.

“The site opposite Wyndsors World Of Shoes is a well known area for items, including dangerous items, being left there.

“We are planning on cutting back all roughage, shrubs and hedges to make sure the space is open and so it is easy to see what is being dumped there and by who.

“At some point we will enforce plans to build fencing around the area which will block people from tipping.

“It is a criminal offence under Section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and anybody who does it can face a fine up to £50,000 and imprisonment.”

Anybody who witnesses fly-tipping in their area contact the council on 01942 404364.
