Farewell services for tragic pair

Jordan Chambers

Jordan Chambers

THE funerals of two Wigan men whose deaths were linked to a poisoned ecstasy scare will take place separately at the same church tomorrow.

Jordan Chambers and Gareth Evans were taken fatally ill within hours of each other last month after taking a number of pills from what appeared to be a rogue batch of the class A drug.

Police issued an urgent appeal to anyone else who had come across the brightly coloured heart-shaped pills to get in touch and contact a doctor too if they had taken them. Several people did present themselves at hospital as word spread but they were all in the clear.

However, officers have so far been unable to rule out a link between the deaths of both 19-year-old Mr Chambers of Baker Street, Poolstock and 28-year-old Mr Evans of Marigold Street, Worsley Hall, and other similar tragedies in Liverpool and Derbyshire.

And as it was announced that both Wigan men’s funeral services will take place at St James with St Thomas’s Church, Poolstock, a fresh tragedy was announced.

Police said that two 19-year-old men from Gwynedd had been taken ill in recent days after taking ecstasy pills nicknamed “green apples.” One, although seriously ill at one point, had made a recovery but the other had, sadly, died.

Again a connection to the Wigan deaths cannot be ruled out by officers.

Last week the inquests into Mr Chambers and Mr Evans’s deaths opened at Bolton Coroner’s Court. After a short hearing each was adjoined to a date yet to be fixed pending further inquiries.

The funeral of Mr Evans, who also went by the name of Gary or Gaz Ashton, takes place at the Poolstock church tomorrow morning.

Mr Chambers’s service will be held at 1.15pm followed by interment at Gidlow Cemetery.
