Farm explosion injures teen

A teenager has been injured in a gas explosion at a Wigan farmhouse.

Gas from a cooker caused an explosion at Rowe Farm, Lowton at approximately 4.30am this morning (Sunday).

There was no-one at home just prior to the blast but a boy aged 14, returned to the house to collect belongings and smelled the gas.

Shortly after he alerted a family member about the gas leak, the explosion occurred leaving him with superficial burns.

It is unclear what had ignited to cause the explosion

The boy managed to call the emergency services and despite his injuries, managed to get to the main road to direct Leigh and Atherton fire crew to the incident.

Rob Gibson, Watch Commander for Leigh fire service said: ''The young boy was extremely lucky to come away with superficial burns.

"He had the sense to go back to the top of the road and direct us onto the farm.

"He is a bit of a hero really".

The explosion caused considerable damage to the property.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "Police were called to Sandy Lane, Lowton, following reports a cooker had exploded.

"Officers attended and discovered a 14-year-old boy had been injured.

"Fire and ambulance services were already at the scene."

The owners of the property declined to comment.
