Fire guts shop

A CORNER shop in Bamfurlong was completely gutted by fire in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Fire crews were called to David’s Convenience Store on Bolton Road at around 2.10am after it was reported the shop area on the ground floor of the building was ablaze.

Firefighters from Hindley Fire Service used hose reels and breathing apparatus to prevent the fire spreading to neighbouring properties and put the flames out, before crews used a positive pressure ventilation fan to draw the smoke out through the roof of the building.

The shop was completely destroyed in the fire, and there was also extensive smoke damage throughout the rest of the property, which was empty when the fire began.

Fire crews remained at the scene throughout the day on Sunday to preserve the scene for fire service investigators, who visited on Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters then damped down the flames and removed the debris from the site, with work continuing into Sunday evening.

The cause of the fire is now under investigation.

Watch Commander Dave Thomason from Hindley Fire Service said: “We had to work very quickly to confine the fire to the shop downstairs, and managed to bring it under control about 15 minutes after we had gained access though the rear of the property.

“It is very fortunate no-one was in the building when the fire started.

“We would like to reassure all the residents in the area that we will be visiting neighbouring properties and offering full home fire risk assessments in the near future.”
