Fire on bus

editorial image

PASSENGERS on a bus travelling from Leigh to the Trafford Centre had a lucky escape after it caught fire on Wednesday morning.

The 126 service was travelling anti-clockwise along the M60 motorway when he was forced to pull over on to the hard shoulder near junction nine at about 11.10am.

The driver led the passengers off the South Lancs Travel bus and escorted them to a safe place on the embankment.

Fire crews from Irlam used a hose reel and breathing apparatus to tackle the fire, which involved an engine fuel line and the bus’s exhaust system.

Greater Manchester Police were initially called to the scene by the ambulance service, but were then informed there was no need to attend the scene as it had been dealt with by the fire service.

Nobody was injured during the incident, and the passengers were provided with a replacement vehicle to take them to their destination by the Atherton-based company.
