Four-car crash outside hospital

Wigan Lane, Wigan, was closed for a period of time after a nasty collision involving four cars outside the Hospital

MOTORISTS in Wigan ground to a halt after a main road into the town was closed in both directions.

The emergency services were called to Wigan Lane, outside Wigan Infirmary, at 10.50am, after a four car crash.

It was understood that three vehicles ploughed into a car which had pulled up to park at the side of the road.

The last car in the pile-up - a red Citroen - suffered the main impact, with two women trapped inside.

Fire crews cut the roof off and the driver, thought to be in her 40s, was taken to hospital on a spinal board with neck, back and hip pain.

The passenger, plus another woman who was extricated from a different car were also taken to Wigan Infirmary.

Three other people, a woman and two men, declined hospital treatment.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said that all injuries were minor.

The road was open at 12.20pm.

Jellybean2801, in all my years of driving professionally my advanced instructor sums it well and simply, the recipe for a crash or RTI. 1. Speed. 2. failure to obey a traffic rule. And combine the two and you have the ingredients for a crash. so the rear car was doing something wrong to cause the pile up !!

Post 12.. If there was an ambulance free to attend at the front of the hospital, that one would have gone. However the ambulances leave Wigan hospital as soon as the patient has been processed through their admission. You can rest assured the nearest one would attend, located by GPS signal.

I have seen loads of people just stop in the middle or the road waiting for spaces to become free, its crazy and surprised its not happened before.

Post 12. Possibly not. Somebody would have to ring 999 as you can't simply ask the hospital A&E, which would go through a central switchboard nowhere near Wigan, who would then send an ambulance according to some set of pre laid out criteria, not of which would involve driving an ambulance 50 years from the front of the hospital. We should never let common sense get in the way of bureaucracy.

A good place to crash outside a hospital. that would keep the ambulance call out times low

Jellybean and dangermouse, your so called relatives were driving to close, if they give the correct amout of space in betweeen each car to allow for breaking sharply travelling at the correct speed they would have avoided impact All boils down to driving so close, and now two in-expierenced drivers have caused our premiums up. Accidents are caused end of!

I was once involved in a similar accident. I had stopped but was pushed into the rear of the car in front by another vehicle. In the end all parties had to pay . It was a no win situation apart from the insurance companies!!

Reading the story it appears that the citroen driver is the woman to blame for this accident, obviously paying too much attention to anything other than the road! She should be prosecuted and made to take a re-test. And before the "You're just against women drivers brigade" start - I am a woman driver!

No sympathy has been asked for and yes you maybe entitled to your opinions but that does not mean your opinion counts when you know half of the facts No rest fr the wicked....can you comment anything other than premiums as you have also stated about this in 'railings smashed in collision' story too Obviously upset by your car insurance pal maybe you should start walking if it's such an issue considering this one RTA would not cause such an increase in premiums, maybe this has something more to do with current economic climate and those in it

Quote " If somebody crashes into the back of somebody else, it is their fault even if the person in front was driving badly" Not always the case, if you are in a stationery vehicle you can be shunted into the vehicle in front. Possible even when you have allowed the required gap to allow you to pull out if the vehicle in front stalls and can not move.

For your attention mistress ploppy, a relative of mine was also involved in this incident and there is every need to know EVERY fact in this case. There were 4 vehicles involved, the first vehicle was not struck or collided with in anyway. The second vehicle was struck in the rear by vehicle 3. This was due to vehicle 4 shunting vehicle 3 into the rear of vehicle 2. Vehicle 3 had stopped with out colliding before it was shunted. Vehicle 4 was a compact hatchback with a kerb weight of 790kg. Vehicle 3 was a family saloon with a kerb weight of 1570kg. Now you do the math to work out how much energy and speed was required for vehicle 4 to shunt vehicle 3 into vehicle 2. Its called the concertina effect for your information. And regards logging on for 100% sympathy for relatives or friends involved, this is not the issue here and certainly not why I wanted to view the news report. But when some sarcastic little keyboard warrior wants to pass judgement on all parties involved merely by reading the basic report andor chooses to post a "witty" comment then it most certainly justifies a response from the friends and family of those involved to set the record straight. NOW there is no scope for negotiation!

Post 2. This forum is here for the very purpose of people being being allowed to express their opinion.Too many people with a vested interest come on here expecting to read posts expressing100% sympathy with their relative or friend, and it's not the real world. There is no need to know the true facts in this case. If somebody crashes into the back of somebody else, it is their fault even if the person in front was driving badly. There is no scope for negotiation on this.

this is a 30mph zone if these drivers were doing less than that then any car pulling up would not be hit by following vehicles. No need to be there to know what happened, just that the drivers were all inattentive and should be prosecuted.
