Fund-raising to thank hospital
When little Daniel Davies was born, he needed two heart operations.
Now his grateful grandfather is raising cash for the hospital which saved the life of his grandson.
Surgeons at Liverpool's Alder Hey hospital repaired a hole in Daniel's heart after he was born at Wigan Infirmary in 2005.
To thank them for their commitment, Phillip Davies is visiting pubs and restaurants across the borough to collect money for the hospital.
Phillip, from Wrightington, has already persuaded 25 establishments to collect money for the cause.
Phillip said: "The operations that doctors carried out at Alder Hey have completely changed Daniel's life. I'm hoping that the idea snowballs so that as many companies as possible in Wigan get involved and help save the lives of other children just like Daniel."
Daniel's birth was a harrowing experience for his 21-year-old mother Laura Smith.
Months into her pregnancy with Daniel she began to bleed and was rushed to Wigan Infirmary where she was told by doctors that she had lost the baby.
After a series of scans she was then told that Daniel was alive, but had developed a block in his heart.
This meant that the heart's electrical impulse would not pass from the organ's upper to lower chambers.
Laura, from Howard Street in Pemberton, said: "We were told to our relief that the block had healed; the doctor said that it was only the second time he had seen something like this in 15 years of practising medicine."
But shortly after Daniel was born he developed a heart murmur - a sign of congenital heart disease which includes a hole in the heart.
Following cardiac surgery in September and October 2005 at Alder Hey Hospital Daniel made a full recovery.
Laura said: "We will forever be indebted to the staff at Alder Hey. When Phillip told me that he had this idea I thought it was absolutely fantastic."
