Girls in race hate attack
Police are hunting race hate thugs who punched and verbally abused a teenage girl on a bus.
Other passengers are being urged to come forward with information after an incident that a detective today branded "an absolute disgrace."
The 19-year-old victim boarded the 658 First bus from Leigh to Wigan at the stop on Kirkhall Lane in Leigh at about 10.30pm last Friday.
She became involved in a argument with two teenage girls, one of whom turned violent and punched her in the face four or five times. The victim was then racially abused and attacked again before the pair got off the bus in Bickershaw just after the Tamar pub.
The first girl was white, about 16, and wearing a red football-style top and light-coloured trousers. Her accomplice was also white and said to be about 16. She was wearing a black tracksuit top with pink writing, and dark coloured jeans.
Officers are appealing to anyone who has information about the incident to come forward.
It is believed there were three or four other passengers who were on the bus at the time, and police are keen to speak to these people.
PC James McCallion, based at Leigh Police Station, said: "It is an absolute disgrace that in this day and age, a young woman can be abused and attacked just because of the colour of her skin.
"The mentality of those who carried out this attack is one I know that the majority of people find impossible to comprehend, and their appalling behaviour must be punished. People cannot be allowed to get away with racism.
"I would appeal to anyone who knows what happened to call me."
