Health campaign's 'man manual' idea

Health chiefs in Wigan have come up with an innovative new way of reaching men – by joining forces with garages across the borough.

Garage owners have agreed to hand out 'man manuals' to customers during Men's Health Week later this month.

The Health Development Team at Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Primary Care Trust (PCT) will work in partnership with the Men's Health Forum to promote the week, which runs from June 15 to June 21.

Just one of the initiatives planned will see local garages, currently participating in the Trading Standards Fair Play Charter scheme, distributing copies of the Haynes Man Mini-Manual to their customers.

Andi Sizer, Men's Health lead at Ashton, Leigh and Wigan PCT, said: "Men are increasingly unlikely to consult a doctor and mortality rates are higher for men than women for all major causes of death, including cancers and cardiovascular disease. So, it is important we undertake activities like this to raise awareness of the importance of making lifestyle changes to improve health and well-being."

The Men's Health Forum has worked with Haynes, the car manuals publisher, to create the mini manuals – specifically designed to promote health messages in a way than engages men.

The manuals provide an easy-to-read guide on a variety of health issues, including a healthy weight, diabetes, prostate cancer, erectile dysfunction and high blood pressure.

The garages taking part in the initiative are: Standish Service Station Ltd; Leyland Mill Lane Motors Ltd; Roundhouse Tyres; John Atherton Autos Ltd (both the Spring Street & Acton Walk Garages); Foxfield Motors Ltd; Acton Garage; Atherton Car Safety Centre and County Motors (Leigh) Ltd.

According to new research, released by Friends Provident in advance of Men's Health Week, more than three quarters of men have ignored medical symptoms of ill health in the past year. Nearly half (44%) of men don't check themselves for cancerous signs.

More than a third (34%) don't know how to check themselves for testicular cancer and only a quarter know how to check themselves for breast cancer and prostate cancer.
