Higher than average lung deaths in Wigan

editorial image

MORE people die from asbsestos-related conditions in Wigan than in most parts of Britain.

Figures obtained by not-for-profit campaign group the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) show that from 2006 to the end of 2010, the terminal lung cancer mesothelioma was recorded as the underlying cause of 61 borough deaths.

This is the equivalent to 2.8 deaths per 100,000 people. The average for England and Wales over the same period was 2.5.

One of the contributing factors to the higher-than-average rate is that the borough was once home to large asbestos factory, Turner Brothers of Hindley Green. Tragically, several former staff have died from illnesses caused by exposure to fibres there years ago.

APIL president David Bott said: “More people die of mesothelioma in Wigan per head of the population than in most other parts of the country.

“This is bad enough, but the number of men dying from this disease is expected to peak during the next five years and what many people don’t realise is that hundreds of sufferers across the UK cannot get the compensation they need to help them through the last days of their life.”
