Hock's tears over drug call
Drug-shamed Gareth Hock admits he broke down in tears when his career came crashing down - but the Wigan and England rugby league star insists he does not have a cocaine addiction.
And speaking publicly for the first time about the scandal, he says he is relieved to have been caught – so he can tackle the problem.
Hock faces a two-year ban after failing an after-match drugs test.
Recalling when he heard the career-shattering news, the 25-year-old said: "I'd gone for tea at my mum and dad's when I got a call from somebody from UK Sport.
"They said 'We've got some bad news for you' and my stomach just turned. Even though I'd been expecting it, I still couldn't believe it had happened. I started crying."
Hock, one of Super League's biggest stars, was too embarrassed to tell his six-year-old son. His girlfriend only discovered he had failed a drugs test on the news.
Hock made the admissions in yesterday's News of the World. It is understood that he was paid by the Sunday tabloid for the interview.
He insisted he never became an addict, but started taking it at the end of last year when he was drunk.
"When I was sober I didn't touch it," he said. "I could go for long spells without doing it. It just depended how drunk I was."
He says he was "hanging about with the wrong crowd" when he was offered cocaine last year.
