Hospital meets waiting time target
IT’S official – Wigan has the best performing Accident and Emergency department in Greater Manchester.
Wigan Infirmary’s A&E was the only one in the region to treat all patients within the government’s four hour waiting time target in December – a notoriously busy period.
Stepping Hill hospital in Stockport, Tameside General, Wythenshawe and Pennine Acute which runs hospitals in North Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale and Bury, all failed to hit government waiting targets for all four weeks in December.
Royal Bolton, Manchester Royal Infirmary and Salford Royal also failed the target for at least one week in December.
A spokesman for Wrightington Wigan Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) who run Wigan Infirmary said: “WWL are pleased to have met the government’s four hour waiting time target for our Accident and Emergency (A&E) department during December 2012.
“While there has been an increase in the number of people attending A&E during December, our advanced planning across the trust and team working by doctors, nurses, therapists, community services, discharge team and all other supporting services has helped to ensure the waiting time targets were met.”
Latest figures from the Department of Health reveal 329 patients in other parts of Greater Manchester had to wait between four and 12 hours for treatment in the last week of December alone.
The previous week 426 patients were left waiting, 352 patients in the second week of the month and 422 in the first.
Dr Sanjay Arya, Divisional Medical Director said ,“The collaborative working between the Borough’s health services and ourselves at the acute trust has helped us to deal with the higher number of patients during December. We have good leadership by clinicians and managers and a commitment and dedication to patient care by all involved.
Steve Aspinall, Divisional Director of Performance for Medicine added, “We also must praise our very effective bed management processes that are in place. The winter months can put extra pressure on our services within the hospital, and we would still encourage the public to Choose Well before visiting A&E.”
Local pharmacies are just one option if you need advice or treatment for a minor illness and offer free, expert advice for a range of minor conditions. GPs or the out-of-hours service is another option to consider.
There is also the walk-in centre at Leigh Infirmary that can help with minor injuries or ailments.
