Hospital survey delights bosses

PATIENTS at Wigan borough’s hospitals are happy with the service they are getting according to a report.

The national Care Quality Commission (CQC) Outpatient survey saw 371 patients questioned between July and October last year on what they felt about hospital services in the borough.

Wrightington Wigan and Leigh NHS foundation Trust (WWL) which runs Wigan Infirmary, Leigh Infirmary and Wrightington Hospital, came out well in patient opinion’s, scoring an average score of 8.9 out of 10 in the questions asked.

WWL scored highly in hospital environment and facilities (9.1 out of 10) and in seeing a doctor (8.8 out of 10). The lowest scores were five out of 10 for waiting in the hospital and 6.6 out of 10 for leaving the outpatients department.

A spokesperson for WWL said: “WWL is pleased that this report has identified the improvements that have been made over the last two years at the Trust. We are continually striving to improve the patient experience. The Outpatient Team has recently attended a workshop hosted by Picker Europe where all other trusts are present. We interpret our local and national results and also share ideas for improvements with other trusts nationally.

“At this trust we continue to monitor patient experience and replicate the Picker survey when doing our own internal annual survey. This allows us to develop an action plan in order to monitor and improve areas where the scores have dropped or not improved since the previous survey.”

Nationally the CQC reported that there had been an improvement in the way that patients perceive key aspects of care including being seen on time or early for their appointment, cleanliness, respect, dignity and communication with doctors. However, they added that there are still a number of areas where improvement is needed.

Cynthia Bower, Chief Executive, CQC said: “Attending an outpatient clinic can be a stressful and worrying experience for some patients. It is therefore encouraging to see some improvement in basic aspects like being treated with respect and dignity and cleanliness. However, more still needs to be done to ensure that outpatients know what to expect, have tests and treatments explained to them clearly.”

What a complete waste of time and money. 371 patients questioned, what percentage of the throughput does that represent? Hardly a enough I think to represent a cross section of the experiences within the trust. More a case of someone making money at OUR expense

"PATIENTS at Wigan borough’s hospitals are happy with the service they are getting ..." ...... "hospital services in the borough" ...... "Wigan Infirmary, Leigh Infirmary and Wrightington Hospital, came out well in patient opinion’s" ................ BUT, Wrightington Hospital isn't in Wigan Borough, so why include it in a silly 'borough' story. ...... Wigan folk are borough mad. They never stop talking borough.

Are they still moving patients from one unit to another in order to "tick" the right boxes re waiting times? Probably.

have they looked at the maternity unit ? all over wigan !! a complete joke. must think the patients have nothing better to do than waste time cruising around, wasting time and fuel as well parking charges because they sold Bilinge hospital which was all in house for luxury housing that's on hold and not selling.
