Icy blast bad news for health
Health experts have warned that the heavy snowfall could lead to an increase in people inhaling second-hand smoke.
According to Smoke Free North West, freezing temperatures and icy surfaces are causing more smokers to stay indoors and smoke around other people.
And children are particularly at risk, with many at home due to school closures plus being more susceptible to the damaging effects of second-hand smoke.
More than 17,000 under-fives are admitted to hospital in the UK each year due to the effects of second hand smoke.
A figure which could be exacerbated by more people smoking indoors around children due to the adverse weather.
Andrea Crossfield, director of Smoke Free North West, said: "With
temperatures dropping to below freezing and snow falling heavily, smokers are tempted to stay indoors and smoke in confined spaces where others can inhale their smoke.
"Inhaling second-hand smoke is extremely harmful, particularly to children where the damage to lungs is much greater."
