Independence fight will go on despite apathy
PROTESTERS are pushing on with their fight for independence from the Metro.
Organisers of the campaign for separate Town Councils for Leigh and Atherton and Tyldesley say that the apathy across the borough as a whole to their scheme hasn’t weakened their resolve.
Just just over half a per cent of the 140,000 families who received the town hall’s Community Governance Review questionnaire bothered to respond to it.
But campaign leader Coun Norman Bradbury pointed out that there had been a positive response from the two wards at the very centre of the proposals.
And he is now urging the Metro’s ruling cabinet to take note of this when they sit to decide on a response to the consultation later this autumn.
Coun Bradbury said: “It’s up to Wigan MBC to do the right thing and hold referendums in Atherton, Tyldesley and Leigh, so that this issue can be resolved once and for all with Town Councils introduced where the residents want them.”
He dismissed the fact that so few people has taken part in the Community Governance Review when the borough as a whole was taken into consideration as evidence of a lack of desire for change among voters.
A total of 783 responses were received, 32 of them spoilt. Final proposals will be drawn up after councillors have given their views on the consultation and its findings.
