Justices accept broken arm plea
A TEENAGE motorist who was unable to attend a speed awareness course because she had broken her arm was given a let-off by magistrates.
Alice Hayes was clocked speeding in her Toyota Yaris at 39mph along Warrington Road last July - a 30mph zone.
The 19-year-old was offered a fixed penalty fine at the scene but opted instead to pay for a speed awareness course.
However, after breaking her arm over Christmas, she was unable to attend and her case was brought before Wigan Magistrates’ Court.
The defendant, who pleaded guilty to the speeding charge, told the court: “I got a doctor’s note and my dad sent it off to the people that run the speed awareness course, but we didn’t hear anything back.”
Magistrates opted not to fine Hayes, of Laurel Grove, Ashton - as she had already paid £60 for the speed awareness course - and handed her a 12-month conditional discharge. Her driving licence was endorsed with three penalty points.
