last page turns for bookshop

A CHRISTIAN bookshop in Wigan has shut down after more than 30 years in the town centre.

Words Bookshop, behind Wigan Parish Church in Bishopgate, has been forced to close after a struggle with finances.

The bookshop, which sells Christian books and Bibles, has been a feature in the town for more than 30 years.

Decision

But with declining sales, owner Jane Williamson made the decision two weeks ago to close the store and put on its final sale last Saturday.

Jane said: “We were in Wallgate, but moved behind the church in February.

“All our customers followed us, but it’s not enough. We were doing well over the summer, but for some reason trade completely died in September and October.

“No new people have been coming in. People have stopped spending.

“It’s a shame we are closing. There is nowhere else in Wigan for Christian books.

“People will have to travel to Southport, Liverpool or Manchester.”

Words Bookshop worked with churches and schools in Wigan and was closely linked with Wigan Parish Church.

Jane added: “We would like to thank the Parochial Church Council and rector of Wigan Parish Church Ray Hutchinson, as they agreed for us to use the building and they have been very supportive.

“We would also like to thank the staff, volunteers and all the regular customers we have built up over 30 years and Howard Gallimore, owner of Gallimore’s Restaurant, for all his help. ”

Sad

The Rev Ray Hutchinson, rector at Wigan Parish Church, said: “We are really sad that after more than 30 years Wigan has lost its Christian bookshop.

“The church is pleased to have been able to help the bookshop continue its life when it moved from Wallgate.

“We wish Jane and all the staff very well for all they go on to do.”
