Latics star’s 100mph drive ban

WIGAN Athletic star James McArthur has been banned from driving after being caught doing more than 100mph on the M6.
McArthur, 23, appeared before Eden Magistrates’ Court at Penrith on Wednesday just a few hours after playing for Wigan Athletic in a league match against Aston Villa.
McArthur, a midfielder, pleaded guilty to speeding on the northbound carriageway of the M6 near Carlisle on October 9 2010.
The court heard that police clocked the average speed of his Audi A5 on that day was 104.1mph over a stretch of nearly two and a half miles of motorway.
Mr Mark Savill, defending, said McArthur, of Woodside, Chorley, was involved in charity work and donating strips to youth teams in Scotland as part of help with grassroots football.
Of the offence he said: “He simply tells me it was an open road and road conditions were good.
“He just unfortunately exceeded the speed limit, without paying attention to it. He knows he shouldn’t have done it and tells me he will not do it again.”
McArthur, who already had three points on his licence, was banned from driving for 14 days by the magistrates.
He was also fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £50 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
McArthur, 23, is a former Scotland Under-21 international midfielder, who joined Latics last summer from Scottish Premier League club Hamilton.
This season he has featured 16 times for Roberto Martinez’s team, with nine of those appearances coming as a substitute.
