Lifesaver given award
A Wigan man who risked his life to save a driver from a burning car has been commended for his bravery.
Peter Dalby was riding his bike home from work on Manchester Road, Higher Ince, last June when he saw a Honda car, driven by John Ward, suddenly catch fire.
Without thinking, the 28-year-old rushed to help the driver, whose left arm and hair were on fire.
Peter, from Hindley, said: "I opened the door and John was strapped in so I had to undo his seatbelt and help him out of the car.
"Parts of his body were on fire so I used my coat to put out the flames. Another man, Kyle Browitt, came and helped him out."
Seconds later the Honda exploded in flames.
Shaun Aspey, watch manager for Wigan Fire Station, said: "What Peter did was brave and had he got to the car seconds later he could have been killed.
"The driver managed to escape with minor burns, and if Peter didn't save his life he definitely saved him from serious injury."
