Long-awaited facelift for hospital

WRIGHTINGTON Hospital – birthplace of the hip replacement – is set to be transformed thanks to £18m investment.
Over the next three years, a modernisation programme at the campus will see new wards, operating theatres and a new admissions facility.
Following the 50th anniversary of the first successful hip replacement by Sir John Charnley, the future of the hospital has now been mapped out for decades to come.
As part of a £70m investment programme across all three of Wrightington Wigan Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) sites (including Wigan and Leigh Infirmaries), Wrightington Hospital - which specialises in joint replacement surgery will be fully modernised.
A WWL spokesman said: “We are excited to confirm the details of the planned development work that will take place at Wrightington Hospital.
“The new developments will include 56 beds (two 28-bed wards. Each ward will have 16 single rooms and three four-bedded bays, a new operating theatre and a new admissions/discharge area.
“Over all the scheme cost will be around £18m and construction is planned to start in February 2014 with completion planned for September 2015.
“The new facility will provide improvements to patient experience through the provision of a new modern ward environment with increased single room provision.
“Furthermore, the new build will provide the opportunity to significantly improve the operational flow of the hospital as clinical services will be located closer together.”
The building work will be carried out in a joint venture between VINCI Construction UK and Sir Robert McAlpine.
Tony Clayson, Divisional Medical Director for Specialist Services, added: “I am delighted the Trust has decided to invest in developing Wrightington Hospital.
“The development can only further improve what is already a high quality Orthopaedic service that we deliver for both residents of Wigan Borough and the wider North West population.
“Our patients will now benefit from receiving their treatment in a high quality modern state-of-the-art facility.”
Mark Thomas, Regional Director, IHP, North West, said: “We have designed a vibrant and modern healthcare facility which will provide a warm and friendly environment for the patients of Wrightington Hospital.
“The redevelopment will provide the trust with extra space and the flexibility for further growth.”
As part of the £70m investment plan, Wigan Infirmary will get increased car parking, an education centre, a dedicated elective surgical centre, an oncology suite, more single room accommodation, a second MRI scanner and a pathology essential services laboratory .
At Leigh Infirmary there will be a complete refurbishment of Hanover block to host gastroenterology, urology and decontamination services and new outpatients, diagnostic and treatment facilities.
