Loose woman is a fast lady

Loose women star Sherrie Hewson revved up to take part in for a driving day for the blind.

The day at the Three Sisters track in Ashton was set up to give people who are partially-sighted or blind the opportunity to drive a car, which was a first for many of the people who attended.

Lyn Garside, from Galloway's Society for the Blind, based in Preston, said: "Most blind people have never driven a car before so it's quite an experience for them to know what driving is like."

Daytime TV star Sherrie has recently bought a house in Orrell to be close to her daughter, Keeley Boyd, and grandson Oliver.

Sherrie was invited along to the Driving Day by Anne Fairhurst who is also grandmother of two-year-old Oliver as well as Secretary of Wigan and Leigh District Society of the Blind.

Sherrie said: "The driving day is a fantastic idea and everyone had a great time. I have been humbled by what I've seen today.

"Some people have driven round the track with absolutely no sight and I'm scared about going on a motorbike. It's really inspirational."

As part of the day, blind people from across the North West got the chance to be driven at high speeds in a classic convertible car, on the back of a motorbike or drive around the track themselves guided by an instructor.

Anne said: "There are people who have come from Liverpool, Morecambe and Preston as well as Wigan to take a spin around the track. We hope to make this an annual event because everybody had a great time."

Lewis Mountford, a member of the Wigan and Leigh Society, said: "I really enjoyed driving round the track.

"I've driven before but last time it was on a runway so there wasn't much involved. Driving on a race track is much more interesting."

Karen Boylan, who lives in Platt Bridge, said: "It was fantastic, I have never driven before and it was great to have the opportunity to do so. I was nervous at first but the instructor talked you through every step."

Sherrie said: "It's inspiring how positive the people here are, they have a real go get it attitude that makes you take another look at yourself and realise the things you moan about really aren't important."
