A MAN was left battered and bruised after being assaulted by a masked gang in Wigan.

Five offenders dressed in dark clothing with hoods up and scarves covering their faces punched and kicked the 19-year-old victim before stealing his mobile phone and a packet of cigarettes.

Police suspect the same gang was involved in a similar robbery minutes later and are now appealing for witnesses to both incidents.

PC Kat Tyldesley, said: “This was a nasty unprovoked attack which has left the victim understandably shaken with numerous injuries to his head and body and so we are keen to track these five offenders down.

“It is possible the same offenders were involved in a second robbery nearby just minutes later where a 28-year-old man was also robbed, so I am appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this incident to also get in touch.”

The first incident occurred on Norfolk Street, Springfield, at around 9.20pm on Thursday 17 January with the second robbery taking place on nearby Frog Lane between 9 and 9.30pm.

A mobile phone was stolen from the second victim, who was also assaulted.

Anyone with information on either robbery is asked to contact Wigan Police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111.
