A MAN who refused to stop for police, crashed his car into a wall after a chase and then tried to report the vehicle stolen has been jailed.

Kenneth Muthoni of Withington Lane, Aspull, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at Liverpool Crown Court.

The 25-year-old was this week sentenced to 12 months and two weeks in prison, disqualified for driving for four years and ordered to take an extended retest and fined £100.

At 10.30pm on Thursday, November 15, 2012, Muthoni was seen driving his Audi A3 by a police officer on patrol in Wigan town centre.

The officer noticed a very strong smell of cannabis coming from the car and indicated for it to stop, but the driver refused and sped off.

During the pursuit by officers, Muthoni drove through red lights and went the wrong way around a roundabout reaching speeds of 90mph.

He ended up crashing into a parked car and garden wall at an address nine miles away in Croft Avenue, Atherton.

Muthoni then ran off, abandoning the car.

The following morning he reported the car stolen to the police.

Unbeknown to him at that time, the pursuing officer had captured a clear image of him on the in-car CCTV as he ran off.

During the investigation it transpired he was on licence having been convicted of possession of cannabis with intent to supply and was recalled to prison when charged by the police.

Insp Phil Bromley said: “Today this man has been sentenced for his reckless actions.

“Despite being released on licence from prison he was in possession of drugs and thought of nothing other than trying to evade arrest when he saw the police car behind him.

“The manner in which he drove put other people’s lives in danger and it is fortunate that nobody was seriously injured or killed when he crashed.”
