Man's horror as mailbox is blown apart

A Wiganer whose mailbox was blown up is calling for a ban on the sale of fireworks.

John Cunliffe, from Hindley, was in his living room watching television when he heard his mailbox explode after youths put a lit firework inside.

Now the 56-year-old wants it made illegal to sell fireworks over the counter in shops.

He said: "It was a very dangerous trick to play and the authorities must do something immediately to prevent further attacks from happening, or else someone could be seriously injured.

"These youths, who seem to have more money than sense, prowl around at night looking for things to blow up."

The Thunderbolt firework was thrown into John's mailbox at 10.45pm.

"I jumped from my seat I was so shocked," said John.

"And I'm not the only person in Hindley who was targeted on the same evening."

John has written to Independent councillor Bob Brierley for help.

Coun Brierley said: "I was shocked to hear what had happened to Mr Cunliffe and I have asked Ian Harrison, the council's chief executive for community protection, to carry out a full investigation and compile a report into the wreckless damage caused by young people with fireworks.

"The council continue to say that there is no crime in Hindley, but I beg to differ.

"There are problems with anti-social behaviour and the only way to address them is to get more bobbies on the beat at night time when most of the crime happens."

Coun Brierley added: "I'm very dissatisfied with the criteria that 999 calls are sectioned as different categories to incidents involving anti-social behaviour.

"This is something which has to change immediately."
