Man stabbed former friend
A Wigan man plunged a Bowie knife into the stomach of a former friend as he sat in a bar, a court was told.
Paul Charnock persisted with the attack and his victim, Ian Hughes, had to fend him off with a bar stool.
Charnock then ran off from the scene, Winston's Bar in Upper Dicconson Street, Swinley, and his victim was rushed to hospital where he underwent exploratory surgery, said Philip Astbury, prosecuting at Liverpool Crown Court.
Charnock, of Carlisle Way, Aspull, admitted wounding with intent and, after hearing that he is mentally ill, Judge David Aubrey QC made a hospital order.
He ordered that the 41-year-old be detained in the medium secure Edenfield Centre in Greater Manchester within the next 28 days as soon as a bed comes free. Meanwhile, he is to remain in custody.
The judge said that he will be detained there until the doctors believe it is safe to return him to the community.
The court heard that he is suffering from a delusional disorder which can be treated.
Mr Astbury told the court that the incident happened on February 4 when
Mr Hughes was in Winston's Bar.
Charnock used to be his neighbour and friend, but they fell out in 1995 after Mr Hughes fractured his jaw in a dispute. He was subsequently prosecuted and received a community sentence.
After learning that Mr Hughes was in the bar, Charnock went in and shouted at him to come outside for a fight. Mr Hughes refused and Charnock produced a small Bowie knife with a serrated five-inch blade.
Brian McKenna, defending, said that Charnock, who has no previous convictions, suffers from an acute persecution complex.
