Martin's high hopes for pie ditty

An Aspiring singer has penned an ode to Wigan's favourite food.

Pie-loving Martin Guy, of Chapel Street, Orrell, composed the four line ditty – which celebrates the humble meat and potato pie – while at work some months ago.

The 40-year-old, recently unemployed bus driver is now hoping the jingle will be adopted by one of Wigan's bakeries and become a well-known chant on the local terraces.

Martin said: "Making up silly jingles is something I've always done, they come to me all the time.

"I don't know whether I'm gifted or just daft.

"This one came to me when I was on the buses. I was parked up behind Uncle Joes Mintballs and it kind of popped into my head.

"I pressed record on my phone and that was it."

Although reluctant to give the whole thing away here – Martin hopes his moment of inspiration will earn him some cash – he is willing to give potential buyers a taste of what he calls, "the perfect jingle to sell a meat and potato pie."

Sang in a George Formby style, it begins as follows: "A meat 'n' potato pie, is somethin' that I must buy..."

Although he is essentially putting the words up for sale, Martin, who thinks "pies are scrummy", is also something of a performer himself and would consider being part of the package.

The married father-of-two, who has a nine-year-old daughter Charlotte and seven-year-old son Bradley, has auditioned for the TV talent show X-Factor three times.

Although he has not had any success so far, the karaoke fan is refusing

to give up.

He said: "I shied away from it in a way because of the rejection from X-Factor, then something inside me said 'what are you giving up for' so I'm going to give have another crack at it." If that fails then a career in advertising could beckon.

"Who knows what could come of it? What I would really love is to hear the fans at Wigan rugby or Wigan football singing it when they score a try or a goal."
