Men fire waterjet at dog

Horrified staff tried to stop three men as they fired a waterjet at a cowering dog.

The drenched mongrel curled up in pain as the water, diluted with dangerous chemicals, soaked him on the forecourt of Dave Gilson and Son service station.

As the three men – believed to be in their 30s – sprayed the animal, a young child who was with them was forced to watch on in horror.

The husband of one of the sales assistants stormed out of the station shop on Garswood Road and they turned round and swore at him, telling him it was none of his business.

Michael Gilson, who runs the petrol station, said: "It is absolutely disgusting. Really shocking and disturbing. I wasn't there at the time, but we caught the incident on CCTV.

"The power of those handheld jet sprays could kill a small animal."

In an effort to stop them, the man, who does not want to be named, warned they could do real harm to the little dog.

He approached them and told the three men that the dog could be blinded by the chemicals or even killed by the force of the water.

The incident has had such an effect on staff that they have put a sign up warning people that their actions are being monitored by CCTV. It reads: "This car wash is not to be used for washing dogs. CCTV is in use and will be used if necessary."

Mr Gilson said: "We were going to ring the RSPCA, but we had no clue who they were. It just beggars belief. This was either a horribly callous act or it was down to sheer stupidity."

Another member of staff, who does not want to be named, said: "I just can't believe it, I am dog lover and to see them do this to a defenceless animal made us all feel sick."

Since the sign has been displayed there have been no more incidents and they are hoping that the threat of CCTV cameras will deter the offenders.
