Mugger punched woman, 60, in the face

Detectives are hunting a cowardly mugger who repeatedly punched a 60-year-old woman in the face while trying to steal her purse.

It was about 12.50pm on Saturday when the woman was attacked as she returned to her silver Renault Scenic which was parked at the car park at the back of Lamberhead Post Office, Ormskirk Road, Pemberton.

She had just been visiting a nearby cash machine.

As the victim got into the vehicle and sat down, a man approached, flung open the door and tried to snatch her purse.

She put up a struggle and clung on to the purse.

The man then hit her several times in the face and chest.

He eventually gave up and ran off empty-handed towards nearby St John's Church.

The woman was left with scratches to the face and was extremely distressed.

The man is described as white, in his late 20s, about 6ft tall, with a slim athletic build and long legs.

He was wearing a beige jumper with blue hoops and dark trainers.

The attack occurred at a busy time of day with plenty of shoppers around and it is thought several people may have witnessed the incident.

Officers in particular want to speak to an elderly couple who were walking their dog when they went to the victim's aid.

A Wigan CID spokesman said: "This was a nasty and cowardly act against an innocent member of the public going about her lawful business. We would like to speak to anyone who can give information leading the suspect's arrest and conviction."

Those with details should call Wigan CID on 0161 856 5307 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
