Newlove: Six-week trial led to conviction
Jordan Cunliffe was convicted of the murder of Garry Newlove after a six-week trial at Chester Crown Court.
Mr Newlove, 47, was attacked outside his home on Station Road North, Fearnhead, Warrington on August 10, 2007. He was left unconscious and died in hospital two days later, having suffered fatal injuries.
During the trial the court heard that Mr Newlove was kicked "like a football".
Jordan Cunliffe, Adam Swellings, 19, and Stephen Sorton, 17, were all convicted of Mr Newlove's murder.
Two other defendants, a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old, were found not guilty of murder or manslaughter.
In court, Swellings admitted to throwing the first punch and pleaded guilty to manslaughter, but this was rejected by the prosecution. One of Sorton's trainers was found under Mr Newlove's body as he lay dying on the street.
Jordan Cunliffe's involvement is less clear. He denies taking part in the attack, but acknowledges he was present while it was taking place.
The prosecution, using the law of joint venture, argued that he was guilty because he knew what his co-defendants were capable of, having witnessed an incident in a Warrington park a week earlier.
But Jordan claims he was not present during that incident.
The jury deliberated for 10 days before returning their verdicts on January 16, 2008.
