CALLOUS thieves raided a Wigan nursery, stealing children’s toys and more than £800 in cash.

Staff and young tots at Heron Day Nursery, in Brick Kiln Lane, were distraught when they discovered their centre had been ransacked. The burglars stole around £830 in cash - which included more than £120 in donations to Wigan and Leigh Hospice, plus a Wii console, a PlayStation and related computer games.

Lyndsey Pemberton, manager, said: “The burglars have made a lot of mess.

“They have broken the doors and windows and tipped Lego and other toys all over the floor.

“They have stolen thousands of pounds worth of stuff, including the children’s Wii, PlayStation and all their games and laptops,

“They also took a lot of cash which was for children’s uniforms and trip money.

“We had been selling teddies and had a sweet box and had been collecting for Wigan and Leigh Hospice over the last couple of months and all that money has been taken.

“The children were mortified about their things being stolen - because they play with the Wii and PlayStation every day. We had to keep the children in one room while we tidied up.

“I am totally disgusted. It is different to just taking office stuff and cash, but when they steal the children’s toys and charity box, it is completely disgusting.”

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the incident happened sometime between 6.20pm and 7am Thursday night/Friday morning.

She added: “They caused damage to a door and window and stole cash, a charity box, computer consoles and games.

“It is thought they entered the premises through the window.”

Police are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

If anyone has information they can call 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
