Online fraud warning
POLICE are warning people about a surge in cases of internet fraud.
People using the internet to sell their possessions are being warned to be on their guard against fraudsters who avoid paying for goods.
A number of residents have made reports to police that they have had an item for sale on internet sites such as Gumtree and Ebay and have accepted a final bid for an item. However, the buyer has then used a fraudulent Paypal account, tricking the seller into posting the items but then not going through with the payment.
Detective Constable Tony McClements, of Lancashire Constabulary, aid: “The majority of people looking to buy or sell items online are legitimate and the majority of transactions happen without issue. However, people do need to take precautions, as it is very difficult - if not impossible – to get items back once they have been posted and you’ve been duped.”
