A WIGAN man has been fined after being caught in a Council mystery shopper-style operation designed to stamp out illegal cigarette sales.

Wigan and Leigh magistrates heard this week that Soyab Gajra, 41, of Cloister Street, Platt Bridge, sold a packet of 10 Lambert and Butler cigarettes to to a 16-year-old girl who called in to Pemberton Service Station last August when he was on duty.

Gajra, who pleaded guilty to breaching the terms of the Children and Young Persons Act, failed to ask for evidence of her age, said prosecutor Jessica Hodgkinson.

He was fined £100 and must pay £250 costs.
