Plans for a new McDonald’s unveiled in town

AMERICAN fast food chain McDonald’s has submitted plans to build another drive-thru restaurant in Wigan, creating 65 new jobs in the process.

A spokesman for McDonald’s Restaurant Ltd has confirmed that it has put in an application to create a two-storey restaurant building with drive-thru, car parking, landscaping and order kiosks at the site of the old Upper Morris Street Working Men’s Club, in Scholes.

The bid will create 65 full and part-time jobs to the area.

The Wigan Evening Post broke the news last August of rumours that McDonald’s Restaurant Ltd was negotiating to buy the premises which closed almost two years ago.

At the time, a spokesman for the company could neither confirm nor deny the plans, but he did reveal that they were hoping to be able to announce further expansion soon in Wigan.

But the Evening Post can reveal that a planning application was submitted to Wigan Council at the end of January, which is pending consideration.

Consultation began at the beginning of this month and ends on March 23.

A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “I can confirm that we have submitted plans for a new drive-thru restaurant in Upper Morris Street in Wigan.

“A new McDonald’s would bring investment to the area and provide 65 full and part-time jobs for the community.

“We are excited about the prospect of investing in Wigan and will be working with Wigan Council on our plans.”

But some residents are unhappy about the plans and members of the public are invited to attend a discussion with council planners at Regency Court, in Orchard Street, Scholes, at 3pm tomorrow.

Marjorie Wooton, 67, of Regency Court, said: “There are a lot of residents living in Regency Court, which is located at one side of the old working men’s club, and there is an old people’s home at the other side, plus a nursery.

“To put a McDonald’s there is ridiculous.

“On a Friday and Saturday night teenagers congregate at the top of Scholes, so with McDonald’s there to attract more youths, it will be even worse.

“We already get noise from guests at the hotel nearby and now there are plans for a McDonald’s.

“I know a lot of pensioners who live in the bungalows nearby are against the plan.

“So I say the more the merrier to attend this meeting tomorrow.”
