POLICE were called out more than 6,000 times to Wigan’s pubs and clubs over the last two years, according to new figures.

Officers were required to attend incidents at 500 venues across the borough for a variety of offences including robberies and thefts, assaults and violent crimes and rowdy and inconsiderate behaviour.

The venue with the highest amount of call-outs, with a total of 147, is the Last Orders pub on Wallgate with a further six town centre locations also featuring in the top 10.

Those premises include clubs Hub, Reflex and Jumpin’ Jacks, Ibiza bar and pubs Moon Under Water and Harry’s bar.

Supt Andrea Jones, of Wigan Division, said the police remain committed to ensuring the safety of all visitors to the town centre. She said: “Thousands of people visit the town at the weekend and the majority will have no need to contact GMP.

“However, this data relates to a minority of incidents where people have contacted police because of arguments, mobile phone theft, asking for the nearest taxi rank as well as simple misunderstandings.

“Each one of these calls is dealt with based on its own merit and is prioritised accordingly – officers and staff work with our partners to ensure the most appropriate response is given for each call.

“As part of work to police the town centre, each weekend our teams carry out a night time economy initiative. This includes working with our partners at Wigan Council to ensure that everyone visiting the town has a safe and pleasurable experience.”

A total of 6,061 call-outs were received across Wigan borough in 2011 and 2012, working out at just under 60 per week, figures released by Greater Manchester Police under the Freedom of Information Act record.

The information also includes call-outs for non-illegal behaviour such as reports for lost or found property or people as well as instances where the premises were used as location points.

While two Leigh venues make the top five list, Pulp, of Railway Road, and the Waterside Inn, of Canal Street.

Old Isaacs Public House, off Market Street, Atherton, also makes the top 10.
