Police raid Wigan home

A YOUNG Wigan man who was running a cannabis farm at the home he shared with his partner has been jailed for 14 months.

Liverpool Crown Court heard that the couple’s three-year-old daughter also lived in the house and could easily have wandered into the bedroom where the illicit crop was being grown.

Jailing Callum McCormick, the judge told him that that was an aggravating factor in the case.

McCormick, a 21-year-old from Alexander Street, Newtown, had admitted producing cannabis, possessing it with intent to supply and illegally abstracting electricity.

His partner Claire Tittensor of the same address, pleaded guilty to permitting her premises to be used for producing cannabis.

She was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment suspended for two years.

The 20-year-old was also placed under supervision for 12 months and placed under an electronically monitored curfew between 7am and 7pm for three months.

Karen Brooks, prosecuting, told the court that police raided the house on June 28 last year and found cannabis plants drying.

It was estimated that they had a potential yield of almost 1kg.

The hearing was told that the drugs could have been sold on the streets for up to £10,000.

Mrs Brooks said that McCormick had a sophisticated system going with a tent in the middle of the room and the electricity meter had been tampered with to provide free heating and lighting.

The power authority had been cheated out of £437, said Mrs Brooks.

McCormick was out when police arrived but turned up during the raid and admitted that the drugs belonged to him.

He said he would have sold some of the crop to friends.

Paul Treble, defending, said that McCormick had got involved in cannabis cultivation in order to pay off a drug debt but he has since been on a drugs rehabilitation course.

William Swalwell, who was defending Tittensor, said that she had felt under pressure to let the enterprise take place under her roof.
